A consultant's assessment of Milton's playing fields, presented to the Conservation Commission this week, found aging and overplayed facilities and identified Flatley Field as both the town's most-used park and the one residents most want to see improved.

MILTON -- The Milton Conservation Commission held an informational meeting July 28 to hear a presentation on the Park Department's Recreational Master Plan. Conservation Agent Steve Ivas, Park Commission Chair Carolyn Cahill and Park Director Kevin Crissom took part, along with a project team working with the Parks Commission. No vote was taken.

TOWN -- The consulting team told commissioners it assessed the town's parks and fields starting in fall 2025 and surveyed the community, drawing 1,300 responses. Andrews Parks, Cunningham Park, Kelly Field and Flatley Field were named the most frequently used sites, with 38% of respondents saying they play at Flatley Field. Flatley Field also topped the list of locations residents want improved, at 38%, followed by Lower Guild at 34% and Kelly Field at 31%. Eighty percent of respondents supported adding fields, 82% supported the town acquiring land for fields, and 82% backed adding fields even if it meant more staffing. The team said 61% of respondents favored more multipurpose rectangular fields, with baseball and softball fields drawing 16% and 13% support, while 7.5% said no new fields were needed. Presenters cited an inventory of seven multipurpose rectangular fields, three 90-foot baseball diamonds, seven 60-foot baseball diamonds, six 60-foot softball diamonds, a tee ball field at Andrews Parks, four basketball courts and nine tennis/pickleball courts, and flagged overplayed turf, limited maintenance staff, aging amenities, drainage problems and a lack of athletic lighting as recurring issues.

Separately, Milton Recreation (MRec) said fall flag football registration opened July 7, covering a kindergarten/1st grade in-house league and 2nd/3rd and 4th/5th grade teams that travel in the Quad County League. Registration for a new 6th-8th grade girls flag football league opened July 15. MRec dance registration is open for the 2026-2027 season, with classes in ballet, hip hop, jazz, lyrical, tap and poms; the year-end recital is set for June 5 at the Platts Performing Arts Center at Milton High School. MRec is also offering summer open swim at the Lieder Family Pool on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. through August 12, at $3 per person or $5 for a family of four or more, alongside its regular morning and evening lap swim hours.

YOUTH LEAGUES -- Milton Youth Basketball opened registration for the 2026-27 season, with deadlines of September 11 for grades 3-8, October 1 for grades 1-2 and November 1 for 4K through kindergarten.
