Milton's Conservation Commission voted 6-0 to approve a baseline documentation report advancing a long-stalled conservation restriction at 88 Milton Street, a deal tracing back to a 1997 enforcement dispute that produced a $75,000 fine. Chair John Kiernan recalled the standoff, recounting telling the property's forester, "look, Doc, you can't do that," only to have him defy the order for years. The commission also voted unanimously to let a developer choose from five native tree species, including black oak, white oak, sycamore and tupelo, to satisfy an enforcement order requiring replacement trees at Peverly Park after a roughly 300-year-old oak was illegally cut down near Central Avenue and Elliott Street.
Commissioner Georgia Lee said she was troubled to learn realtors commonly advise clients to "just cut down the trees and then say, oh, sorry." Four pending project hearings, at 120 Highland Street, 45 Riverside Avenue, 274 Old Farm Road and 26 Barton Lane, were continued pending missing data or state file numbers, with a site inspection set for September 12.
